Atelier LuxNox and Found Projects Install Twin Corten Pavilions in Xiangshan Coastal Valley

architecture-design · 2026-04-09

In Ningbo's Xiangshan, China, the Twin Pavilions project has been finalized by Atelier LuxNox and Found Projects, replacing an underutilized observation deck. This initiative features two steel constructions that overlook the ocean, adorned with Corten grating of varying densities. One pavilion ascends vertically near the mountain, while the other has a lower, elongated shape running parallel to the coastline. Below, concrete walls outline circulation and create a semi-enclosed courtyard that faces the sea. The two single-pitch structures are positioned at right angles to one another, offering a modern take on the traditional gable roof. Their shared structural system and materials foster unique identities through variations in scale and proportion, while the perforated steel facades create dynamic effects of light and shadow. From the foothill, the pavilions present an asymmetrical yet harmonious arrangement within the landscape, facilitating a flow of movement, framed views, and moments of stillness, transforming the act of gazing at the sea into an uninterrupted spatial experience.
