Olivier Assayas' film adaptation of Giuliano da Empoli's novel 'Der Magier im Kreml' has been criticized for amplifying the book's weaknesses, particularly its reliance on Russian stereotypes. The original novel, a debut by the Italian-Swiss political scientist, gained significant attention upon its German translation in February 2023, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in April 2022. Marketed as a journey into the heart of Russian power and described as an 'empire of lies,' the book filled a perceived gap in serious reporting from Russia at the time. The film, however, is seen as merely replacing old clichés with new ones. The novel's initial success was partly due to a publishing climate where authoritative insights from within Russia were scarce. Da Empoli, despite not being a recognized expert on Russia, found an audience with his dramatic portrayal.
