ArtsHub Publishes Modern Theatre Etiquette Guide After Actors Decry Audience Misconduct
Due to an increase in inappropriate audience conduct, ArtsHub has unveiled a guide focused on contemporary theatre etiquette. This initiative has drawn attention from actors such as Cate Blanchett, Rosamund Pike, Cynthia Erivo, and Gillian Anderson, who have expressed their worries. Based on discussions with theatre personnel throughout Australia, the guide presents nine essential rules for attendees: verify ticket information; comprehend seating arrangements; dress appropriately; arrive 15 minutes prior; take your seat when the bell rings; silence electronic devices; refrain from talking as the lights dim; limit snacks; and recognize the right moments to applaud, as applause customs differ by genre. The guide discourages heckling and loud outbursts, citing Gillian Anderson's experiences, while Amy Lane, Opera Australia's Head of Opera, emphasizes the need for engaged audience involvement.
