Arts Council England Unveils Streamlined NPO Application Process for 2028-2033

Arts Council England has released initial details for organisations applying to become National Portfolio Organisations for the five-year period from April 2028 to March 2033. Applications open in October 2026, with full guidance in September 2026. The minimum annual funding threshold is £50,000. Eligible applicants include arts organisations, museums, and libraries. The portfolio now runs for five years, up from three, aiming for greater stability. The application process has been redesigned with fewer questions and no attachments required at the initial stage. CEO Darren Henley stated the approach fulfills a commitment from an Independent Review, acknowledging demand will exceed supply. In the 2023-2026 round, 1,730 organisations applied for over £2 billion, with £1.34 billion available for 985 organisations. Decision-making will involve artform, museum, and library panels, plus a Sector Advisory Panel. The new Strategic Framework, published in May, guides the programme with goals on excellence, access, and geographic reach.
