Artist Travis Chapman Paints Yellowstone Bison Attack Victim

Artist Travis Chapman created a dramatic painting of Carl McDaniel, a 65-year-old grandfather who was tossed eight feet into the air by a bison at Yellowstone National Park. McDaniel was visiting with his 13-year-old grandson when a truck honked at the animal, provoking it to charge. McDaniel told his grandson to run in one direction while he ran the other to draw the bison away. The bison attacked McDaniel, breaking his leg. Photographer Mike MacLeod captured the attack on video and then intervened by running toward the bison, waving his arms and screaming to scare it off. McDaniel underwent surgery at a hospital in Bozeman and is recovering with physical therapy. He posted on Facebook, 'Thank you everyone I am O K.' Chapman's painting, shared on Instagram, depicts the moment McDaniel was airborne. A commenter named Noelle, who knows McDaniel, said he has a great sense of humor and might enjoy the artwork in a few weeks.
