Artforum's final back-cover ad honors Bruno Bischofberger with Warhol portrait

Artforum's July 2026 issue features a historic change on its back cover: for the first time since 1986, the space is not occupied by Bruno Bischofberger's signature photographs of Swiss life. Instead, the page displays Andy Warhol's portrait of Bischofberger with the caption 'In Memoriam,' marking the gallerist's death in May at age 86. Bischofberger had taken the back-cover advertisement for nearly four decades, creating a consistent visual tradition of unsettling, idyllic Swiss scenes. Curator Darren Flook noted the consistency of Bischofberger's ads through the magazine's ups and downs, describing them as 'strange, sometimes idyllic, often weirdly unsettling.' Bischofberger was instrumental in introducing Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat to European audiences. The tribute concludes a long-running art world ritual.
