Art World's AI Embrace Risks Amplifying Gender Inequities, Report Warns

According to a report by Artnet and the Association of Women in the Arts (AWITA), the integration of AI in the art sector exhibits a gender bias. The second annual Hardwiring Change survey, which included over 2,000 participants—mostly women—indicates that 62% utilize AI tools, with ChatGPT being the most popular at 57%. Almost 58% of respondents cited gender, race, class, or caregiving as barriers in their careers. Caroline Taylor from Appraisal Bureau highlighted that male artists have an average fair market value that is 45% greater than that of their female counterparts. Penelope Sonder from NALA emphasized the need to confront structural biases in AI. Meanwhile, institutions like the Palace of Versailles are investigating AI, and Isabelle Mattar calls for tools that move beyond a 'ventriloquized white male' perspective. The International Labour Organization has raised concerns about generative AI's impact on jobs predominantly held by women.
