In response to the catastrophic earthquakes in Venezuela on June 24, which resulted in thousands of fatalities and widespread displacement, the Venezuelan art community and diaspora have initiated various fundraising efforts. Cristóbal Ochoa, an interdisciplinary artist and political refugee residing between Paris and Madrid, has delayed his solo exhibition at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Florencio de la Fuente in Cuenca to kick off TODOS X VENEZUELA. This initiative features artworks at a 30% discount, with funds directed to humanitarian organizations such as Caritas. A digital catalog on Instagram has garnered €5,480 (~$6,265) from 46 artists. Meanwhile, New York artist María Elena Piombo shares urgent needs on social media, and Valentina Vacó highlights the duty to assist in rebuilding. Additionally, the 'Venezuelan Cultural Diplomacy' exhibition at Henrique Faria New York and the KIOSKO installation, organized by Eugenia Sucre Projects and El Consulado, are selling over 200 small-format pieces until July 10, with proceeds aiding World Central Kitchen. In Barcelona, Sorondo Projects is offering photographic works from artists like Suwon Lee and Angyvir Padilla for a minimum donation of €150 (~$171), benefiting Fundación Sun.Risas and the We Love Venezuela Foundation. These grassroots initiatives illustrate a decentralized method of providing assistance, circumventing conventional channels.
