Art as a Critical Tool for Deciphering the Present

In a recent opinion piece on Artribune, Stefano Monti argues that contemporary art is essential for developing the critical skills needed to understand the present. Monti suggests these topics are often silenced or overexposed, hindering reflection. He contrasts the historical role of disciplines like theater, literature, and philosophy with today's fragmented expertise, noting that technology companies like Facebook and Google have inadvertently shaped behavior, and Christopher Olah, co-founder of Anthropic, has admitted that AI labs operate under conditions that may conflict with moral imperatives. Monti proposes three conditions for art to serve as a tool for understanding: widespread availability of contemporary art, genuine dialogue with the public, and perceiving art viewing as a dialogic moment. He criticizes the current institutionalization of art in museums and calls for new institutional spaces that bridge local emerging art and major exhibitions, fostering critical observation rather than mere erudition. The piece concludes that art, unlike AI, can induce people to question taboo topics, making it essential for societal evolution.
