Arnold Zweig's 1932 Novel 'Una muerte en Jerusalén' Published in Spanish for the First Time by Siruela

publication · 2026-10-22

Siruela has released the first Castilian edition of Arnold Zweig's 1932 novel 'Una muerte en Jerusalén', with translation and prologue. The German-Jewish writer, born in Glogów in 1887 and dead in Berlin in 1968, set the book in Jerusalem in 1929, where the Jewish intellectual Yitzhák Josef de Vriendt is killed by three close-range shots on a hot summer afternoon. De Vriendt had already received threats and refused to leave the city despite the urging of his friend Lolard B. Irmin, head of British intelligence in Palestine, who then takes charge of solving the crime. The plot unfolds in Palestine under the British Mandate. Described as a highly political work of high literary ambition, the detective story is used to explain anti-Zionism inside Israel.
