Archohm Designs Shuttlecock-Inspired Badminton Academy in Bhubaneswar

Architecture firm Archohm has completed The Shuttle, a badminton academy in Bhubaneswar, India, featuring a distinctive design that mimics a shuttlecock. Located near Kalinga Stadium, the facility aims to highlight Odisha's commitment to the sport and establish the region as a global badminton hub. Principal architect Sourabh Gupta explained the building's spherical form represents the cork head of a shuttlecock, with nighttime lighting simulating feathers. The structure houses eight courts within a large, elevated hall described as a 'black box' for optimal environmental control, alongside additional facilities in the building's base. Practical considerations, including resilience against cyclonic winds common to Bhubaneswar, influenced the rounded shape. Public amenities include a ground-floor cafe and sports shop with a glazed facade, plus a rooftop viewing area offering city vistas. Gupta characterized the project as a visual landmark intended to be memorable for the community and to promote Odisha as a sports destination.
