Architectural Transformations of Agricultural Structures Highlighted in Global Roundup

A recent architectural feature showcases five projects globally where cowsheds and similar agricultural buildings have been creatively adapted or newly constructed. The collection includes both conversions into residential and cultural spaces, as well as purpose-built facilities for livestock. In India, Compartment S4 designed a sculptural Cow House in Maharashtra using brick, stone, and bamboo to prioritize animal and staff welfare. David Kohn Architects converted a 1979 agricultural building at Middle Rocombe Farm in Newton Abbot, UK, into a combined house and studio named Cowshed, preserving original timber trusses and concrete elements. In Dorset, UK, Crawshaw Architects transformed a neglected former cowshed into the Stanbridge Mill Library, featuring a wooden barrel-vaulted arcade inspired by Palladian architecture. Julius Taminiau Architects in the Netherlands created The Potato Shed, a home retaining only the foundations of an old structure, with a cladding of thin timber slats. Studio Saar built the Gaushala dairy facility in Rajasthan, India, using 560 tonnes of reclaimed materials like steel and rubble, featuring an undulating roof for water management. These projects, located from Rajasthan to Dorset, demonstrate how architects are reinterpreting functional agricultural buildings into designed spaces that respect their histories.
