Archaeologists Uncover Biblical Cities from Jerusalem to Nineveh

cultural-heritage · 2026-10-09

Recent archaeological digs in the Near East have revealed remnants of cities mentioned in the Bible, although experts disagree on their identifications. In the City of David in Jerusalem, discoveries included the Stepped Stone Structure, clay bullae, and an inscription from the Siloam Tunnel associated with King Hezekiah. Charles Warren observed the site of Tell es-Sultan near Ein es-Sultan in 1868, and John Garstang later asserted in 1930 that some walls were those of biblical Jericho, a claim challenged by Kathleen Kenyon. At Megiddo, a six-chambered gate linked to King Solomon was also disputed. In Iraq, Robert Koldewey uncovered Babylon's Ishtar Gate and palace, while Austen Henry Layard found a library in Nineveh containing texts similar to biblical stories.

Key facts

  • The City of David in Jerusalem has yielded clay bullae with names from biblical accounts and the Siloam Tunnel inscription linked to King Hezekiah's water tunnel.
  • Tell es-Sultan, a World Heritage site in Palestine, was noted by Charles Warren in 1868 for its proximity to Ein es-Sultan, the spring associated with Elisha.
  • John Garstang claimed in 1930 that some fortified walls at Tell es-Sultan were the biblical walls of Jericho, but Kathleen Kenyon and others dated the destruction layers centuries earlier.
  • Megiddo in Northern Israel features a monumental six-chambered gate matching those at Hazor and Gezer; Yigael Yadin argued in the 1950s that King Solomon built them, a view contested by peers.
  • Excavations at Megiddo also uncovered horse stables, palace structures, water systems, and hundreds of ivory icons.
  • Robert Koldewey and others excavated Babylon in modern-day Iraq from 1899, finding Ishtar Gate fragments, bricks stamped with Nebuchadnezzar's name, and monumental palace complexes.
  • Austen Henry Layard excavated Nineveh in the 1840s, proving its enormous scale and power, and uncovered a library with Mesopotamian texts paralleling biblical narratives like the Flood.
  • Many biblical timelines for these archaeological findings remain heavily disputed and debated among scholars.
