Arc'teryx: From Canadian Climbing Gear to Streetwear Icon
Arc'teryx, originally founded as Rock Solid Manufacturing in 1989 by climber Dave Lane in North Vancouver, British Columbia, began by producing climbing harnesses and chalk bags. Lane, dissatisfied with available climbing products, started the company in his home. Soon after, he partnered with fellow climber Jeremy Guard, whose expertise helped shape the brand's legendary status. In 1991, the company renamed itself Arc'teryx after the Archaeopteryx, a transitional dinosaur-bird fossil, symbolizing evolutionary innovation in outdoor gear. The logo, designed by graphic artist Michael Hofler, depicts the Berlin specimen, the most complete Archaeopteryx skeleton discovered in 1875 by Jakob Niemeyer. A major breakthrough came when Arc'teryx secured a license to use GORE-TEX® from W.L. Gore & Associates, leading to the Arc'teryx LEAF (Law Enforcement & Armed Forces) line, which includes military-derived and spec-compliant garments. The brand's streetwear explosion occurred during Nike's Future Forum in New York in February 2020, when Drake and Virgil Abloh wore identical Arc'teryx LEAF jackets in the front row. Arc'teryx also engages in environmental and social initiatives, such as the global "bird's nest" campaign, where volunteers in Cologne, Germany, made rain capes from GORE-TEX® laminate scraps for the homeless. The brand's success in streetwear and fashion is attributed to its high quality, performance focus, and accessible pricing.
