Anthony Vincent's 'L'insulte' Examines Reclaiming Slurs as Collective Strength

Journalist and writer Anthony Vincent has published his first solo book, 'L'insulte: de l'injure à la solidarité' (The Insult: From Injury to Solidarity), released by Les Liens qui Libèrent. The work analyzes how marginalized communities—targeted by masculinist, white, and heteronormative structures—have historically reclaimed insults as symbols of unity and emancipation. Vincent defines an insult as a brief, offensive speech act grounded in stigma, which he describes as a negative social status that is assigned and perpetuated. Drawing on the sociological concept of 'stigma reversal' first defined by Louis Gruel, a disciple of Pierre Bourdieu, Vincent argues that insults both mark and situate individuals socially, enabling identification and collective resistance against what he calls the 'cisheteroblantriarchal and ableist order.' The book questions whether reclaiming a stigmatizing word might reactivate the domination it crystallizes, risking the freezing of community identities. However, Vincent contends that reappropriation is inevitable and preferable to depoliticization, aiming to transform the scar of insults into collective strength.
