Anne Hardy's Hollow Humanoid Sculptures at Visual Carlow Through May 2026

British artist Anne Hardy presents 'Interloper,' a suite of floor-based installations and assemblage sculptures at Visual in Carlow, Ireland, through May 10, 2026. The exhibition features life-size 'Beings' that blend vitality with disintegration, constructed from welded-steel bone structures, Jesmonite castings of hands and arms, and the artist's own hand-me-down clothes. Materials like rusted wire, crushed tin cans, and compacted topsoil plinths accentuate age and deterioration. Specific works include 'Being (Contortionist)' (2025–26), 'Being (Interloper)' (2026), 'Being (Immaterial)' (2023–24), and 'Being (Chimera)' (2026), the latter imagining a human-animal hybrid with a pewter-cast snake-skeleton. Hardy's figures, described as hollow, faceless outlines, incorporate personal items such as seashells, discarded ring-pulls, and antique jewelry. The artist previously created large-scale photographic fictions of staged interior scenes before shifting to three-dimensional installation work. 'Being (Slipstream)' (2024–26) features a cyborgian rocket-woman with a motorcycle helmet head and a tangle of wires below the neck. The exhibition maintains Hardy's commitment to mystery through clashing effects, with sculptures that appear twisted or partial, some performing yoga-like poses or prayer rituals.
