Angolan Women Artists Challenge Norms Through Performance and Installation in Luanda

In 2025, several female artists in Angola presented works that critically engage with social and environmental issues through performance, painting, and installation. At the Africell Luanda Art Fair held at the Ferro Museum, Marisa Kingica and Surene Fernandes performed body painting actions on canvases placed on the floor, centering the body as a site of expression and challenging traditional painting conventions. Their performances aimed to transform the exhibition space into an area for bodily experimentation and to assert the female body as an active subject rather than a passive object. In another action, they appeared as 'dolls' to ironically confront stereotypes of femininity. Later, Marisa Kingica exhibited the large-scale painting 'Baltasar' at the 'Artes no femenino' exhibition organized by the Cultural Centro Camões, which addressed harassment against women through a powerful visual language. Meanwhile, Ima Tchitanga presented work at the exhibition '24/24 Mais alguma coisa. Corredores de Transumância Humana' at the Fundação Arte e Cultura, where an installation of animal bones and paintings depicted eroded landscapes, linking ecological memory to human experience. These practices highlight how contemporary female artists in Angola are rewriting narratives around gender, nature, memory, and power, making social and ecological issues visible while affirming agency and reinvention. The events underscore art's role as a form of resistance and a means to imagine alternative ways of inhabiting shared spaces.
