Andrea Abreu Returns with 'Pajaritos preñados' Six Years After 'Panza de burro'

publication · 2026-10-19

Andrea Abreu publishes her second novel, 'Pajaritos preñados', through Anagrama, six years after the runaway success of her debut. The 504-page book, which the author says is not designed for mass appeal at first glance, retains the essence of her style and her ties to her native Canary Islands. 'Panza de burro' appeared in 2020 from the small publisher Barrett: roughly 200 pages, written in Canarian Spanish and edited by Sabina Urraca. It has sold around 100,000 copies and been translated into dozens of languages, turning Abreu into a young literary star. Abreu describes the aftermath as life-changing. 'It changed my life plan,' she said. 'It was like getting into a washing machine.' The six years of retreat that followed the earthquake now give way to a new proposal with Anagrama. The article also cites Georges Perec's 'Me acuerdo' as a work demonstrating that 480 well-chosen memories can be worth more than a mountain of virtual recollections.
