Ancient Fossil Discovery Sheds Light on Early Arthropod Evolution
A fossil discovered over four decades ago in Utah has been identified as the earliest known chelicerate, a group of arthropods that includes modern spiders, scorpions, and horseshoe crabs. The specimen, named Megachelicerax cousteaui, dates back approximately 500 million years to the Cambrian Period and was found in the Wheeler Formation by amateur collector Lloyd Gunther, who donated it to the University of Kansas Biodiversity Institute and Natural History Museum in 1981. In 2019, researchers led by Harvard University invertebrate paleontologists Rudy Lerosey-Aubril and Javier Ortega-Hernández re-examined the fossil, noting its distinct pincer-like appendages called chelicerae, which are a defining feature of chelicerates. The findings, published in the journal Nature on April 1, reveal that the creature measured about 3.3 inches long and had a body structure with a head shield, nine segments, six pairs of limbs, and plate-like gills similar to those of horseshoe crabs. This discovery pushes back the evolutionary timeline of chelicerates by millions of years, as the previous oldest clear evidence dated to around 480 million years ago. Some scientists, such as Jean-Bernard Caron of the Royal Ontario Museum, have noted earlier arthropod candidates with chelicerae, but Lerosey-Aubril argues that Megachelicerax cousteaui provides stronger evidence due to its large, obvious pincers. The research highlights the anatomical complexity of early marine arthropods and suggests chelicerates were more diverse during the Cambrian than previously thought, though they did not become ecologically dominant until later on land.
