Ancient Chinese Fossils Reveal Complex Life Predates Cambrian Explosion by Millions of Years

Fossils discovered in southwest China dating between 539 million and 554 million years ago challenge established evolutionary timelines. Published on April 2 in the journal Science, the study describes over 700 specimens that include organisms resembling both Ediacaran and Cambrian creatures. Researchers identified worm-like bilaterians approximately the size of an adult index finger, with 185 specimens recovered, suggesting these symmetrical animals evolved earlier than previously documented. The collection also contains what appear to be the earliest known deuterostomes, a group encompassing all vertebrates. Paleobiologist Ross Anderson from the University of Oxford notes these findings reveal a more complex picture of animal diversity origins. Gaorong Li of Yunnan University states the discovery closes a major gap in understanding early animal diversification, demonstrating many complex animals existed during the Ediacaran period. The transition from the Ediacaran to Cambrian periods has long puzzled scientists, with earlier Ediacaran fossils showing body plans unlike later creatures. University of Cambridge paleontologist Emily Mitchell, not involved in the research, comments that the discovery makes sense as evidence of a transitional stage. These fossils provide a bridge between time frames, showing creatures previously thought exclusive to the Cambrian explosion had older roots.
