Ancient Berber Underground Architecture in Matmata, Tunisia
The Berber village of Matmata in southern Tunisia features unique subterranean dwellings carved into clay-gypsum soil layers. These structures consist of vaulted rooms arranged around central courtyards, with sleeping quarters, kitchens, and stables on lower levels and storage areas above. Access is provided via staircases, ladders, or graded tunnels. The underground design provides natural climate control, maintaining interior temperatures up to 15°C cooler than outside during summer heat waves.
