American LGBTQ+ Museum to Open in New York in 2028

Set to debut in spring 2028, the American LGBTQ+ Museum will be the first institution of its kind in the U.S., located on the top floor of the New York Historical's new Tang Wing for American Democracy on Central Park West. Spanning 71,000 square feet, it will share an entrance with the New York Historical, enabling access to both venues with a single ticket. Director Ben Garcia, who has been at the helm since 2022, noted that New York was selected for its significant LGBTQ+ history and its status as a hub for LGBTQ+ households and tourists. The concept originated in early 2017 through discussions among founding council members, including Richard Burns, Kevin Jennings, and the late Urvashi Vaid. Notable trustees include Michael Kors and Imara Jones. The main exhibition will explore American history from a queer perspective, beginning with Indigenous communities and covering various historical milestones. Temporary displays will highlight activists, politicians, and queer influences in fashion and music. The museum's inaugural artifact is a brick from the original Stonewall Inn facade. Garcia aims for the museum to resonate with queer individuals while showcasing LGBTQ+ contributions to American history.
