Ambreen Butt Completes Decade-Long Trilogy with Maternal Witness Exhibition at Gallery Wendi Norris

Gallery Wendi Norris in San Francisco is hosting Ambreen Butt's third solo exhibition, titled I Bear Witness, which concludes a trilogy the artist began in 2015. The Pakistani-born artist, born in 1969 in Lahore, presents eight new works that render visible the lives erased by violence, building upon her previous series Say My Name (2015–2023) and Lay Bare My Arms (2023). Throughout this final chapter, Butt positions the maternal figure as both subject and active witness, drawing on religious and cultural traditions like the Madonna and Child iconography to frame witnessing as a vessel of testimony rather than passive loss. The exhibition marks a significant culmination of her decade-long exploration of memory and violence.
