On Friday, May 15, Film Forum will present the U.S. theatrical debut of Amalie Atkins' documentary 'Agatha's Almanac.' This 16mm film features Agatha Bock, a nonagenarian residing independently in rural Manitoba, showcasing her extraordinary DIY skills to maintain her home. Over the span of six years, Atkins captured her aunt's everyday life, which includes tending to a large vegetable garden, baking and canning most of her meals, and living without running water for ten years. The film illustrates Bock's unique method of harvesting a 15-pound watermelon by kicking it with a rubber boot and saving its heirloom seeds. Atkins' cinematography beautifully highlights the vibrancy of Bock's self-sufficient existence, portraying a life filled with resilience and joy in solitude.
