Alice Aycock on 1970s New York Art Scene and Feminist Exhibitions

publication · 2026-04-22

In a 2008 conversation with Alexandra Schwartz for Afterall's Exhibition Histories, Alice Aycock reflects on her formative years in the New York art scene during the late 1960s and 1970s. She completed her BA at Douglass College in 1968 before enrolling in Hunter College for her Master's, where she studied with Robert Morris and others. At Rutgers, she connected with artists such as Jackie Winsor and Keith Sonnier. Lucy Lippard featured Aycock in 'Twenty-Six Contemporary Women Artists' (1971) and 'c.7,500'. Aycock showcased 'Maze' (1972) in New Kingston, Pennsylvania, and presented 'Studies for a Town' at MoMA in 1977. She exhibited at 112 Greene Street and drew inspiration from Earth artists and phenomenology. Her piece 'Project for Elevation with Abstracted Sightlines' (1972) was acquired by MOCA for the 2012 exhibition 'Ends of the Earth'.
