Alibaba's XuanTie RISC-V Architecture Passes 6 Billion Shipped Chips
More than 6 billion chips built on Alibaba Group Holding's XuanTie RISC-V architecture have now shipped, according to Damo Academy, the company's research arm. Meng Jianyi, chief scientist at Damo Academy, disclosed the figure on Monday during the annual RISC-V Summit China in Shenzhen. The open standard is being pushed by the tech giant into artificial intelligence and automotive systems. Chinese chipmakers are pursuing a larger role in the global RISC-V ecosystem as they look to lessen reliance on foreign technology amid US-led export restrictions. RISC-V is positioned as an alternative to architectures developed by Intel and Arm. Meng pointed to Omdia forecasts that worldwide RISC-V processor shipments will rise by almost 30 per cent each year and may reach roughly a quarter of the global processor market by 2030.
