Ali Kaeini's Exhibition Missed Mist Explores Censorship Through Art at NIKA Project Space Paris

Iranian artist Ali Kaeini presents his exhibition 'Missed Mist' at NIKA Project Space in Paris, the French branch of a Dubai gallery. The New York-based artist examines how state and self-censorship have influenced visual expressions of intimacy in Iranian popular culture over decades. His works imagine scenes that might have existed without restrictions, creating single stills from these fictional moments. The exhibition features a central series on raw canvas using fabric dyes, acrylic, ink, spray paint, and fabric collage, with figures emerging through erasure techniques like bleaching. Kaeini describes this method as both practical and conceptually linked to censorship's logic. The artworks display spectral, mist-veiled bodies on muted backgrounds reminiscent of early cinema palettes, with materials like raw canvas and fabric intentionally left casual, featuring exposed stretcher bars and loose threads. Additional pieces combine different fabrics, such as metallic or iridescent materials, with works like 'Decanter and half chandelier' (2024) and 'Crow and the wall' (2024) incorporating symbolic elements like the historic Lion and Sun emblem, banned after Iran's Islamic revolution. A series of calligraphic ink drawings, 'Untitled Series, Figurative Calligraphy' (2023–25), references traditions developed when figurative imagery was prohibited, with Kaeini creating a fictional language blending Farsi and Arabic calligraphy. Domestic motifs appear throughout, as in 'Swans and Blossoms' (2025) with glitter, and 'Flowers' (2025) with cut canvas and fringe patterns. The exhibition draws on metaphors from poet Omar Khayyam and references filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami, emphasizing viewer interpretation. 'Missed Mist' runs until April 11, exploring themes of displacement, memory, and the visual grammar of censorship in Iranian art and culture.
