Alexander Calder's Woven Works at Galerie Hadjer Reveal Overlooked Tapestry Series

Galerie Hadjer presents a collection of monumental tapestries based on designs by Alexander Calder, created from 1971 onward. The American sculptor produced 26 cartoons specifically for the Manufacture Pinton in Aubusson, a European weaving center active since the 15th century. These works translate Calder's gouaches—characterized by organic shapes, bold colors, and taut lines—into wool and silk. The exhibition runs from April 16 to May 31, 2026, at 102 rue du Faubourg-Saint Honoré in Paris. This showcase coincides with a major Calder retrospective at the Fondation Louis Vuitton. Key pieces include Les Masques and Green Ball, both previously exhibited at the Whitney Museum in 1976. The gallery, a historic reference for modern Aubusson tapestry since 1966, highlights how the weavers' craft transformed Calder's two-dimensional images into works with a distinct material presence and architectural thickness. The visual movement inherent in the textile's weave offers a static yet dynamic counterpart to the actual motion of Calder's famous mobiles.
