Alessio Mamo on photographing a 12-year-old war casualty in Iraq
Photographer Alessio Mamo discusses his image of Manal, a 12-year-old Iraqi girl who suffered severe burns to her arms and face from a missile explosion. Mamo, who began photography 18 years ago focused on aesthetics, shifted his practice after covering a 2013 shipwreck off Lampedusa that killed over 250 Eritrean migrants. He now documents post-conflict lives and social injustice. Working with journalist Marta Bellingreri in Jordan, he created the project 'The Hospital of All the Wars' about patients at Médecins Sans Frontières facilities.
