ALERTCalifornia Expands Camera Network to Nearly 1,300 as FireSat Satellites Join Wildfire Detection
California's wildfire prevention efforts now incorporate nearly 1,300 cameras on the ground along with the newly introduced FireSat satellite system. The ALERTCalifornia network, which had around 1,000 cameras in 2023, employs artificial intelligence for immediate monitoring, notifying officials prior to human reports. In Napa Valley, firefighter Colby Nicholson and his team, including former Marine John Connolly and surfer Jim Conley, set up cameras 1,500 feet above the vineyards, under the direction of Dr. Neal Driscoll from UC San Diego. Each setup includes two cameras for backup. This summer, AI successfully identified more than half of California's wildfires at an early stage. FireSat, launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base earlier this year, plans to deploy over 50 satellites by 2030. Governor Gavin Newsom and CAL FIRE Director Joe Tyler commended the project.
