Alberto Greco Retrospective at Reina Sofía Showcases Pioneering Live Art

The Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid is presenting 'Viva el arte vivo,' the most comprehensive retrospective to date of Argentine artist Alberto Greco. The exhibition, curated by Fernando Davis, features over 220 works and documents from 1949 to 1965, drawn from collections including the IVAM, MoMA, and Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires. Greco, who died in 1965 at age 34, was an influential figure whose ephemeral, transgressive practice anticipated urban art, performance, and action art. The show highlights his nomadic career across Argentina, Brazil, Italy, Spain, and the United States, where he developed his concept of 'arte vivo' (live art), emphasizing everyday life and public engagement over traditional art objects.
