AL_A Architects Selected for UK's First Government-Supported Fusion Energy Facility

The architectural practice AL_A, led by Amanda Levete, has been commissioned to design Britain's inaugural state-supported prototype fusion power station. The project will be constructed in Nottinghamshire at the former West Burton A power station site, which ceased operations in 2023. AL_A is part of the ILIOS consortium, which includes Kier, Nuvia, AECOM, and Turner & Townsend, and has secured a £200 million contract under the government's STEP Fusion programme. This initiative aims to develop a commercially viable fusion energy plant by 2040, funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. The redevelopment is expected to generate up to 8,000 jobs and establish West Burton as a hub for fusion innovation, supporting the UK's clean energy and decarbonization goals.
