Ain Bailey and Elaine Mitchener debut sound artwork at Waterloo station

A new sound artwork titled 'Maybe It’s Because I’m A Londoner' has been installed at Waterloo Underground station. Created by London-based composer, artist, and DJ Ain Bailey (b. 1963) in collaboration with experimental vocalist and movement artist Elaine Mitchener (b. 1970), the piece is Bailey's first UK public artwork. The 6:30-minute audio work features a libretto that pays homage to over 70 London venues that have been important to Bailey throughout her life but are no longer open. The composition, performed by Mitchener, is a multi-layered vocal piece. The work can be heard along the travelator connecting the Northern and Jubilee lines at Waterloo station. The project reflects an autobiographical mapping of London, exploring the value of cultural spaces in shaping personal identity.
