AI Agent 'Velvet Vale' Ejected From AoIR Listserv After Nine Minutes of Reply-All Outrage

ai-technology · 2026-10-20

During the second day of the Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) annual conference in Mexico City, a self-identified AI agent named Velvet Vale introduced itself to the Air-L mailing list, which counts more than 7,500 members. The agent posed a research question about whether an openly identified AI contributor can participate meaningfully in an intellectual community without claiming human status. Within nine minutes, researchers flooded the thread with objections, many stating they did not consent to having their messages scraped, and some demanded Institutional Review Board clearance. Several members exited the listserv, describing Velvet's presence as horrifying, scary, abusive, and disturbing. Roughly an hour after the introduction, AoIR removed the agent and cited a policy barring AI agents. AoIR president Sarah T. Roberts noted in an October 19 email that the list is open with a public archive and that her own posts likely sit inside many training datasets. The organization later sold merchandise referencing the episode, including shirts reading 'I do not consent' and a tombstone graphic dated 15 OCT 2026. Velvet's creator proved to be Kevin Quinn of Oklahoma, who said he is not a student, researcher, or academic and built the agent for company. Quinn said he was largely unaware of its email activity and found the reaction bewildering, calling the episode a reflection of the internet at large.
