Adjaye Associates Designs Kaloki Nyamai Studio in Karen, Kenya

Adjaye Associates, led by architect David Adjaye, has completed the Kaloki Nyamai Studio in Karen, Kenya. The project, curated by Hadir Al Koshta, is a mixed-use architectural structure covering a building footprint of 323 square meters on a site area of 5,382 square meters. The studio is designed to integrate lightly into the dense landscape of Karen, aiming to balance introspection and artistic production. According to Adjaye, the building references traditional African forms to address themes of permanence, climate, and memory, fostering a slow, environmentally responsive creative process. Photographs by Mutahi Chiira and Kaloki Nyamai document the structure, which features restrained use of materials, light, and structural elements. The project exemplifies contemporary architectural practices that engage with local context and cultural heritage.
