Adam Harrison Debuts Tabletop Edition of The Painting Game at Museion Bolzano for ICOM Day 2026

publication · 2026-09-23

During ICOM Day 2026 at Museion in Bolzano, Adam Harrison unveiled The Painting Game in an innovative tabletop version. This game, which previously appeared at coleção moraes-barbosa in São Paulo (2024), Fridericianum in Kassel (2025), and Kunstmuseum St. Gallen (2026), merges elements of art, product, performance, and ritual. It features a set of instruction cards, blank sheets, a watercolor kit, and brushes, suitable for any flat surface. Players take turns in a non-hierarchical manner, executing prompts such as "Add something external to the painting." The initial release consists of 500 copies. Collaboratively developed with designer Nerijus Rimkus over two years, it underwent trials with various groups. Harrison's creation resonates with Duchamp's chess and Situationist psychogeography.
