Acquavella Galleries Opens Major Matisse Exhibition Featuring Rarely Seen Works
On April 9, Acquavella Galleries in Manhattan will unveil "Matisse: The Pursuit of Harmony," showcasing more than 50 seldom-seen paintings, sculptures, and works on paper from both public and private collections. The exhibition is curated by 88-year-old William Acquavella, along with his children Eleanor, Nicholas, and Alexander, and gallery director Emily Crowley. This event recalls a 1973 Matisse show at Acquavella's father's gallery, which drew significant attention from artists like Richard Diebenkorn and Alexander Calder, and received acclaim from The New York Times critic Hilton Kramer. Spring 2023 also sees a wave of Matisse exhibitions worldwide, including "Matisse's Jazz: Rhythms in Color" at the Art Institute of Chicago.
