aceboXalonso studio renovates historic Madrid home with iconic 1971 blue pool

aceboXalonso studio has completed a renovation project for a single-family home in one of Madrid's historic colonies. The project, curated by Valentina Díaz, focuses on a house originally built in 1971 when owners installed a distinctive blue swimming pool in their backyard. Architects Victoria Acebo and Ángel Alonso led the design, with technical architects Javier Gonzalez and Javier Mach contributing. Construction was handled by Fernando Roca of Buril estudio. Photographer Germán Saiz documented the transformation. The original pool replaced nearly all of the property's 28-square-meter rear patio, which had previously served as a children's play area and domestic workspace. This architectural intervention reflects Spain's developmental era, when imported fantasies of sun and tourism reshaped domestic spaces. The 2025 project reimagines this iconic element within contemporary design.
