Abbeville Abandons €30.5M Boucher-de-Perthes Museum Rebuild Mid-Construction

institutional · 2026-09-24

The renovation of the Musée Boucher-de-Perthes-Manessier, initially announced by the new mayor, Angelo Tonolli (divers gauche), on 21 September, has been scrapped by the city of Abbeville. This €30.5 million project faced cancellation due to its €2 million annual operating costs and a financing plan lacking confirmation for 87% of the required funds. Originally proposed by former mayor Pascal Demarthe (UDI), the expansion aimed to increase the museum's size from 2,000 to 3,400 m², featuring a section dedicated to Alfred Manessier's artwork, with plans for completion in late 2028. No construction contracts were signed, resulting in compensation limited to tens of thousands of euros. Meanwhile, restoration of the UNESCO-listed belfry is due by 20 October, and a new museum initiative utilizing existing structures is forthcoming.
