AAM Mandates Houston Museum to Drop Comma from Its Official Name

The American Alliance of Museums (AAM) has directed the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) to eliminate the comma from its name, effective April 15, following an April 1 announcement. AAM, which accredits 35,000 U.S. museums and advocates for policy and funding, stated the punctuation caused confusion and diverted focus from the institution's primary goals. MFAH's communications team, known for insisting on the comma in all references, did not comment. An anonymous source suggested the rebranding could impose significant financial and logistical burdens, citing the Philadelphia Museum of Art's recent name-change reversal after public criticism. Comma usage is rare among U.S. art organizations; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA) handles it flexibly, using a comma in press materials but omitting it in search engines. AAM has also advised MFA to clarify its naming conventions, recommending integrating the city name without punctuation, though no explanation was given for differing treatments. Other Houston museums, like the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, avoid commas, while the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth uses a preposition instead. A linguistics expert from Rice University noted the comma could be considered a grammatical error. The advocacy group ALMAAHH may face similar scrutiny if seeking accreditation. In protest, Glasstire altered its name to include a vertical bar and spaces.
