Zurbarán, Banksy, and Gilbert & George Lead This Week's Art Highlights

exhibition · 2026-05-01

A major Zurbarán exhibition at the National Gallery in London, running from 2 May to 23 August, brings together extraordinary loans from the Prado and other top museums, positioning the painter alongside Goya and Picasso as a Spanish great. Meanwhile, Banksy confirmed a new statue in central London depicting a man marching off a plinth with a flag obscuring his face, after a video showed it being towed to Westminster at night. The Gilbert & George Centre in London opens 'Our George Crompton' from 1 May to 2027, paying homage to their late homeless friend. Lynn Chadwick's outdoor sculptures are on view at Houghton Hall, Norfolk, from 2 May to 4 October. Angel Otero presents thickly built-up imagistic paintings at Hauser & Wirth Somerset from 2 May to 18 October. Daiga Grantina, a Latvian sculptor based in Paris, shows her abstract art evoking nature at Warwick Arts Centre, Coventry, from 2 May to 28 June. Other stories include an 8ft statue of Rocky as centrepiece of a show about monuments, the director succeeding Maria Balshaw at Tate, Johnnie Shand Kydd's photography of YBAs, Loie Hollowell's anatomical abstractions, Paulo Nimer Pjota's takeover of a London gallery, and the billionaire Spurs owner selling Klimts, Matisses, and Freuds. The masterpiece of the week is Guido Reni's 'Saint Mary Magdalene' (1634-5) at the National Gallery.
