zU-studio's Sunflower Bench Anchors La Bretxa Plaza in San Sebastián

architecture-design · 2026-04-30

zU-studio has completed La Bretxa Public Space, a reconfiguration of an urban plaza in San Sebastián, Spain, adjacent to the traditional market in the old town. The design uses radial geometry inspired by Basque cultural symbols, notably the 'Eguzki-Lore' sunflower motif traditionally placed at entrances for protection. Four diagonal entry points at the corners reference the 'Lauburu' symbol of unity and the four elements. At the center, a sculptural bench with an organic configuration serves as a focal point, surrounded by a planted area and seating elements. The plaza also incorporates a component referencing the 'Argizaiola,' a traditional Basque funerary object associated with remembrance. The project aims to support daily market use and larger public events, redefining the plaza as an active civic environment. Lead architect Javier Zubiria Gallastegui and technical architect Lander Arregui led the project for the City Hall of San Sebastian.
