Zimbabwean Emerging Artists Exhibit in Paris, Challenging Neo-Colonial Expectations

exhibition · 2026-04-22

Between May 9 and May 21, 2011, the "Jeune Contemporain et Zimbabween" exhibition was held at Galerie Pavé d’Orsay in Paris. Curated by Valerie Kabov and Marcus Gora, it featured five emerging talents from Harare's First Floor Gallery: Wycliffe Mundopa, Brian Banda, Zacharaha Magasa, Moffat Takadiwa, and Terence Musekiwa. Aged between twenty and twenty-seven, these artists explored Zimbabwe's political issues and economic disparities while engaging with contemporary Western art trends. Kabov criticized the neo-colonial mindset prevalent in Zimbabwe's art scene, advocating for the First Floor Gallery's autonomy and encouraging artists to focus on their own creative visions rather than conforming to the expectations of European collectors, thus shifting from ethnographic traditions to broader aesthetic themes.
