ZHANG Hua's 'Poetry of Owls' at REFLEXION, Beijing

REFLEXION gallery in Beijing is presenting ZHANG Hua's first solo exhibition, 'Poetry of Owls,' opening on July 4, 2026. The show features his latest installation works, including copper pieces that emit a golden halo, transforming the gallery space into an evocation of dusk. Central to the exhibition is a pavilion modeled after one the artist lived in, brought indoors and altered with honeycomb-like growth and peculiar textures, blurring the line between shelter and altar. Recurring jagged, serrated motifs derived from plant leaves appear throughout, conveying danger and untamed energy. ZHANG Hua, who has deep ties to Yunnan, draws on local folklore, such as the owl called 'henhu,' a creature of twilight. His decade-long return to the same landscapes has informed his exploration of time and animism. The exhibition reflects on the borderlands between light and dark, the sacred and the everyday, and the interplay of technique and magic. The artist's work seeks to restore a sense of corporeal awareness in a digital age, emphasizing perception as the foundation of myth.
