Zhang Enli's 'Bird Cage' at Galleria Borghese

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Zhang Enli, a Chinese painter born in Jilin in 1965, presents four polychrome installations at Galleria Borghese in Rome as part of the ongoing 'Committenze contemporanee' series. The project, initiated in 2007 by director Anna Coliva, commissions site-specific works from artists to engage conceptually with the museum's spaces and masterpieces. Enli's intervention, titled 'Bird Cage, a temporary shelter,' occupies the entrance portico, the terrace of the secret garden, and the Uccelliera pavilion. Co-curated by Geraldine Leardi and Davide Quadrio, the installations include sculpture-globes in the portico, a cube form on the north terrace, and colorful towers. Enli, who studied academic oil painting in China and teaches at a major art institute in Shanghai, remains relatively unknown in Italy despite prior national exhibitions.
