cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

Zerocalcare's iconic 2014 mural of a mammoth with the phrase "Welcome to Rebibbia" at Rome's Rebibbia metro station has been restored using eco-sustainable paints. The restoration was carried out by Yourban 2030 and Atac, with artist Maria Bressan (Rosmunda) executing the work. The 60-square-meter mural now absorbs pollutants equivalent to 2.4 trees, eliminating emissions from 12.8 Euro 6 gasoline cars daily and removing 34.1 kg of CO2 from the air. The original mural was created in collaboration with Atac and the Italian Publishers Association (AIE) for the 13th edition of Più Libri Più Liberi, curated by 999 Contemporary. The mammoth references archaeological finds of tusks discovered in the 1980s at nearby Casal de' Pazzi. Zerocalcare described the work as a welcome to Rebibbia, highlighting Rome's diversity.
