Zarouhie Abdalian's exhibition 'Production' at CAC New Orleans explores labor through site-specific installations
Zarouhie Abdalian's exhibition titled 'Production' is on display at the Contemporary Arts Center New Orleans from November 3 to February 10, 2019. This showcase delves into the theme of labor, utilizing materials relevant to the port city. Abdalian draws attention to often-ignored items such as ballast stones and construction tools, connecting them to underrepresented workers. A prominent red banner displays the quote 'LET LIVING LABOR LIVE, LET DEAD LABOR DIE,' a nod to Karl Marx. Featured projects include 'Chanson du ricochet,' 'Transport Empty' (2017), 'The stone shall cry out' (2018), 'Hull' (2018), and 'from chalk mine hollow (i–xii)' (2017). Additionally, Abdalian has curated a film series showcasing documentaries by Allan Sekula, Kevin Jerome Everson, and Flora M’mbugu-Schelling. The exhibition is housed in a repurposed warehouse that was formerly utilized by Katz & Besthoff.
