institutional · 2026-04-20

Zara Stanhope will step into the role of director at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki on March 2, 2026, after Kirsten Lacy resigned from the position earlier this year, having served for six years. Stanhope, who previously worked as the principal curator and head of programs from 2013 to 2017, will manage the gallery’s collection and exhibitions while aiming to enhance community outreach and highlight New Zealand stories. Her appointment was announced by Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, with CEO Nick Hill expressing enthusiasm about her return, citing her 30 years of leadership experience, including roles at QAGOMA and the Heide Museum of Art. Recently, she led Cultural Enterprises at New Plymouth District Council. Stanhope also curated New Zealand's showcase at the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019.
