ZAO/standardarchitecture completes Xiao Feng Art Museum in Hangzhou with courtyard-wrapping concrete form
ZAO/standardarchitecture has completed the Xiao Feng Art Museum, which spans 1,298 square meters in Hangzhou, China, as a tribute to the late artists Xiao Feng and Song Ren, who died in 2023. Located at the foot of Daci Mountain, the museum features a striking angular concrete design encircling a central courtyard, inspired by the Ming Dynasty's Scholar's Gardens. The use of black-tinted exposed concrete accentuates the sharp angles. An unconventional layout offers visitors a "multifaceted spatial experience." Entrance is through a courtyard under a bridge, with cubic galleries that have glazed ends. The outer walls are mostly plain, adorned with small skylights. A paved path lined with shallow pools, plants, and seating connects various levels. Founded in 2001 by Zhang Ke, photography credits go to DONG Image, Arch Nango, and Yang Sheng.
