Zanny Begg's algorithmic video installation The City of Ladies connects 2016 Paris protests with a 1405 feminist text
In June 2016, Zanny Begg and Elise McLeod filmed a 20-minute video installation titled The City of Ladies in Paris, following the Nuit debout protests against labor reforms. This work made its debut in 2017 during The National: New Australian Art, a biennial at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. The film portrays seven young women, many of whom are migrants, as they engage in activism in Paris, a city still reeling from the 2015 terror attacks that claimed 130 lives. Featuring voices like Hélène Cixous, Silvia Federici, Fatima-Ezzahra Benomar, and Sharone Omankoy, it draws inspiration from Christine de Pizan's 1405 text, tackling themes such as reproductive rights and rape culture. An algorithm by Andrew Nicholson weaves together 52 narrative strands, with music including a cover of the Eagles of Death Metal's Kiss the Devil by Mere Women.
